From before the American Revolution to the conclusion of the Civil War African slaves had been enslaved against their will. They were taken from their homeland in Africa and brought to the colonies. Once they arrived to the colonies, they were sold to slave masters to work in the slave masters’ field, most of the time picking cotton. During the selling and buying selling process of slaves, many families were often split up. Slaves typically were sold for about $2,000. $40,000 in today’s dollars. While working for their slave masters, black slaves often were brutally beaten, verbally abused, and were viewed as  ¾ of a human being. They basically had no rights. Slaves were allowed to learn how to read and write. Slave masters wanted to keep their slaves ignorant. â€Å"I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday.† (Wheeler, Becker, and Glover page 249) Many times if someone discovered a slave was able to read and write, that slave wa s often punished severely or sometimes lynched. Because of all the horrible and unfair circumstances, the slaves often attempted to run away, seeking freedom. If the runaway slaves were caught, they were often killed or whipped. One individual in particular by the name of Frederick Douglas was very instrumental in the fight for freedom of black slaves. During the Civil War, Douglas recruited African American soldiers for the Union, and he worked after the war for civil rights for the African Americans. Field of Dreams free essay sample

Baseball is used as a metaphor in Field of Dreams (Robinson, Kindness, 1 989) to explain how the main character Ray Kindness attempts to reclaim his innocence. The All American theme of playing catch with your dad is re-visited and it is the premise of the whole movie. The whole plot culminates at that one pastime that so many fathers and sons enjoyed. The viewer finds Out that Ray, and his father have never had a good relationship when Ray refused to play catch with him one day. They never reconciled their differences and Rays father dies.At this point in the movie, we can start to realize how important our relationships with our parents are. Months go by and nothing happens, then one lonely summer night players from the 191 9 Chicago White Sox come out of the cornfield and start playing ball. As mind boggling as it may seem, the voice comes back and repeats the same message as before. Ray cant figure out who he is though.Everyone in his town finds him to be nuts- He learns that he will soon go bankrupt, if he doesnt replace his cornfield. This is the point where Ray has the option to give up his dream. He doesnt even realize that his dream is unfolding before his eyes. Granted it is hard to believe when deceased baseball players are appearing out of thin air, but Ray has to believe that this is real, to see this ordeal all the way through. His sole motivation is to find out who he is. The voice prompts Ray to find an old ballplayer named Archibald Controlling Graham, who had been dead since 1972. Ray sets out to find the author Terrace Mann, who writes about baseball players of the past The trip takes him all the way to Boston. Hear he tells Mann Of the rift between him and his father because he refused to play catch with him. At this point Ray is fully engulfed in finding out what he is supposed to accomplish. This is exactly what he needed to do though. By being fully immersed in figuring out this mystery, he has allowed his mind to believe what is happening, and if he rides it out he will find the truth. While Ray is in Boston, full fledged games are Ewing played at his field back at home.This is another affirmation that his dream is falling into place; this point of the movie represents him getting closer and closer figuring out who he is. Ray travels back to Iowa, with Mann. When he returns he finds that he is bankrupt and that his house is being foreclosed. Mann tells Ray that spectators will come watch the games and pay admission so they can recapture their innocence. It is almost like Mann is a link to the past. The movie uses him to capture the surreal essence of baseball, the good ole days where the roots of baseball were born. Rays life is crumbling before his eyes.He put everything he had into finding his dream and it seems as if its too late. It is at that point when all seems lost that Ray is rewarded for his commitment. Shoeless Joe Jackson, a member of the 1 919 White Sox, infamous for throwing the World Series, says If you build it, HE will come and then points toward the catcher at home plate. The catcher removes his mask and Ray sees that it is his father as young man. Rays father starts to walk off into the cornfield with the other mystical players ND Rays stops him and says dad and asks him if hed like to play catch.As this happens a line of cars can been seen, all waiting to see the game. This is the classic story of a man recapturing what he lost as a child. Even though it is fiction it is a reminder to cherish the moments we have as children, because we never get the chance to relive that again. It also shows that parents are always willing to forgive their children no matter what. To people who watched the movie, and received the message, they realized that in order to achieve their dreams it is imperative to never give up, even when it seems that all is lost.

Literature Essay Thesis LiteratureIn life as in literature people have certain struggles. In the novels and short stories we read this year there are several example of inner struggles, within the characters. The basic type of struggles known to people is Man Vs Man, Man Vs Nature and Man Vs Himself, otherwise known as inner struggle. It is when you have within yourself problems, concerns or questions that you must decide. They often decide to keep its feeling and emotion to themselves. Like the famous Ghandi once said, It was confrontation out of real humanity which marks his true stature and which makes his struggles and glimpses of truth of enduring significance. As a man of his time who asked the deepest questions, even, though he could not answer them, become a man for all times and all places. All struggles can be solved even though solving it made cause fatal deaths like in the play Romeo and Juliet. Often short stories and novels contains some sort of inner struggle, in order to make the plot more interesting. In real life inner struggles happen frequently from the littlest things such as thinking how to get some money in order to get the certain things you want or probably one of the most dangerous inner struggle which is love, always keep your mind confused or frustrated. Sometimes inner struggles cause modern day people to commit suicide. People like Kurt Cobain has died within the years because of his inner struggle. We see that in the play Romeo and Juliet it contains continuos inner struggles. Romeos character undergoes several changes in the course of the plays action. At first he is pictured as a typical youth smitten by love. His fathers description of him is in effect a description of the Petrarchan lover: Many a morning hath he there been seen, With tears augmenting the fresh mornings dew Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs; .. Their two families, the Capulets and the Montegue hated each other and will not allow their children to socialize. Romeo must decide if he should go against their wishes and see her. Mercutios death begins another inner struggle in Romeos life. Mercutios death leads to Romeos killing of Tybalt. That killing lead to Romeos banishment. He wants to see Juliet but he is scared that hell get caught and thrown to Jail. Once again he faces new inner struggles, but the biggest struggle of all is when he find out that Juliet, his future, is dead, and he has to decide on whether he should stay alive or die to see her. Juliets character, like Romeos undergoes a development during the play. There is, at the beginning of the play, a fond attachment between Juliet and the Nurse. For example, she calls her, O honey nurse and good sweet nurse. She takes her into complete confiden ce. But as the play continues and Juliet becomes a new person, now independent except for the love that binds her to her husband, She chooses action that defy the Nurse and her parents. He detachment from the Nurses at first caused by the old womens double-talk in coveying the news of Tybalts death. Juliet asks her, What devil art thou that dost torment me thus? Later, after the Nurse advises her to marry Paris, Juliet is fully disillusioned and decides to break their bond of confidence. Ancient damnation. O most wicked fiend! she screams at the Nurse: Go, counselor; Thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain III, v, 237-42 In her first scenes, Juliet was submission to her parents wishes: Ill look to like, if looking liking move: But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. I, iii, 97-99 Later, however, Juliet goes against her parents wishes; In fact, she resists spiritedly When informed by her mother that she is to marry Paris: Now, by S aint Peters Church and Peter too, He shall not make me there a joyful bride. I wonder at this haste; that I must wed Ere he, that should be husband, comes to woo. ..III, v, 117-20 She is also torn between the conflicting emotions of love for her new husband and concern over her cousins death: Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? III, ii, 97-100 Later on her most important inner struggle is a step which she fears may result in her own death: My dismal scene I needs must act alone. Come, vail. What if this mixture does not work at all? . What if it be a poison, which the Friar Subtly hath ministered to have me dead, Lest in this marriage he should be dishonored, Because he married me before to Romeo? How if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo Come to redeem me? Theres a fearful point! IV, iii, 19-33 In short, Juliet develops from a heroine of light comedy to a heroine of tragedy. We know the Friar as a blessed man. The Friar is a man of God, concerned with the problems of good and evil. When Romeo asks the Friar to unite him and Juliet in marriage, the Friar undertakes the ceremony in the hope that the marriage will dissolved the feud between the oppose houses. For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love II, iii, 91-92 After he learns of Capulets plan to have Juliet marry Paris, the Friar attempts to save the lovers marriages with a magic potion. The Friar is a respected and beloved counselor. Romeo calls him my friend professed. Capulet welcome his daughters changed attitude toward Paris and applauds the Friar from whom Juliet has just come. So to me the Friar had the most difficult inner struggle because the lives of the children with basically in his hand. The end things were a mess. Romeo and Juliet died and the families finally realize their stupidity and decide to end this feud. In the Man Who Knew How by Dorothy L. Sayer. The man Pender seems to have an inner struggle, which is he wants to solve a crime and struggles with how to do it. It was on a Train trip, Pender meets a man who claims to know how to commit a foolproof murder. He refers to a nonexistent chemical, and claims that once taken, the chemical can become lethal when the victim takes a hot bath. When a man in Penders neighborhood dies in his bathtub. Pender encounters the gentleman from the train at the scene of the crime and invites the man home for a drink. He becomes obsessed with the man and kills him with a final blow. Only later he found out they were the same person famous for pulling practical jokes. In The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Helen stoners struggle is the fear of dying in the same way as her sister did. Her sister and she had been living with her stepfather, Dr. Roylott. Two years ago, shortly before her marriage, Julia died mysteriously. She emerged from her room screaming about a speckled band, and died shortly afterward. Helen, because of construction in her room, is, now forced to sleep in her sisters room and she hearing the sounds her sister heard before she died, With the help of Holmes and Watson it was soon discovered that the ventilator had snakes coming down the bell rope. Holmes hit it with his cane and sends it back up the bell rope, through the vent. It retreats, bites and kills Roylott. Helen is saved. The Most dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Sanger Rainsford falls from a yacht in the Caribbean and swims to Ship-Trap Island. There he encounters General Zaroff in his magnificent chateau. Zaroff has grown bored with hunting unreasoning animals and tells Rainsford: over dinner that he now hunts men. Rainsford is soon the quarry. My Perception of Marriage and Family Essay The family is the basic component of our society. Society came from families that multiplied and united years before. Society was formed by a form of social contract in which families volunteered to be parts. When we talk of society, we cannot help but reflect to the idea of family. The two concepts are corollary. It is the family that first teaches us how life should be lived. The family is the basic molding institution of each of us. It greatly influences our lives and the way we view life.I am from a typical Asian family which I consider a traditional type of a family. Asian family can be seen as a functional family in which every member has its own function. The father is the one tasked to find means for the whole family to survive and he is the one in charge in majority of the decision making process. The mother on the other hand, is the one who is tasked to raise the children and to do household chores while the father is out working. The children’s function is to take e ducation and when at home, they will help the mother in cleaning the house and in preparing food for the arrival of the father.As a person coming from a traditional Asian family, I greatly consider my plans of marriage someday as patterned to the structure of which my parents upheld with just some considerations. I look at my father as somewhat my ideal husband and I view my mother as the person that I want to be but aside from duplicating my mother’s service to my family, I want to be a working mother someday. My family context has a strong influence on how I view and want to live life as a whole but then again, I’m also capable of knowing the needs that may arise in building my own family. I find it necessary for me to work someday in order to lessen the burden of working to the shoulders of my husband.Basically, my family’s definition of a family and how it functions is a product of social construction. â€Å"Social constructs are institutionalized entity or artifacts in a social system, invented or constructed by participants in a particular culture or society that exist because people agree to behave as if it exist, or agree to follow certain conventional rules, or behave as if such agreement or rules existed† (wikipedia.org). Social constructs are perceived maxims of people that were put into convention and transformed into social beliefs that will influence people with their daily actions. My context is the reason why my understanding and plan of a family in the future is greatly patterned to the family I came from. The sets of social constructs are somewhat the basis of rightness of my decisions. The lives of people became always intertwined with these sets of beliefs such as I’m intertwined with the kind of family I came from. Social constructs dictate the lives of people. How people ac t depend on the set of social beliefs they have.Social constructs also undergoes evolution. It changes and grows from time to time. This is due to the fact that people’s mind are so rich and full of possibilities. It is capable of conceptualizing new ideas for what they perceived as for the improvement of what they aim for. Social constructs are dynamic because the minds of people are also dynamic. This is the reason why I am also open to be a working mother just like a mother from other types of family. I don’t hinder myself to other perspectives as long as it’s of good help in improving my way of life. Which factors contribute to young people committing crime? Which factors contribute to young people committing crime? Introduction I chose this topic for my literature review as I feel that if we understand the root of the problem of the crime, in this case the risk factors that lead to criminal activity, then juvenile delinquency could be understoodand possibly prevented. A risk factor is ‘some specific characteristic displayed by a person or their circumstances that bears some statistically significant correlative position in relation to their behaviour† (Brown, 2005). Home Office statistics for 2009/10 show that young people age 10-17 were responsible for 20% of all the crime recorded by the police. (Cooper and Roe, 2012). Due to the high number of crime committed by youth, even though they are mostly minor crimes, is it important to understand what leads them to committing criminal acts. Numerous researchers have come up with theories and reasons which try to explain why young people choose to commit deviant acts. The following studies found in this literature review will attempt to explain some of the factors that contribute to young people committing crime. Methodology For this literature review I have used a variety of sources which will provide me with both qualitative and quantitate data. I researched studies from journal articles, government reports and afters going to the library I managed to find many books on the topic of factors contributing to juvenile delinquency. I also managed to find a few websites that provided me with background information and statistics. Findings A number of researchers categorise ‘risk’ factors in many different ways. In this essay however I will mostly talk about individual, social/family and environmental factors. Each of this category has its own subcategories. For example, under the category of social factors it can be included family risks, peer-related risks, etc. Environmental Risk Factors Several research articles I looked at suggests that one of the reasons why youth choose to commit criminal acts is because of poverty. A study was conducted at the Kamiti Youth Corrective Training centre (Y.C.T.C) where the sample were 55 inmates selected by random sampling from a total of 120 inmates. It was found that over 70% of the sample were poor or came from families with poor background. This was based on where they lived, whether or not they owned properties and the types of crimes they committed, For example, some of the inmates stated that because they lacked their basic needs, they run from home into the streets to beg for survival. They stated that they also became involved in petty offences like stealing good or properties values that were not too expensive. This finding showing that poverty is a cause of crime among youth, supports the theory of Thomas R. Forstenzer, in one of his articles called â€Å"Tomorrow in North America: Youth between the American dream and re ality†, in The Twentieth Session UNESCO General Conference Report titled â€Å"Youth in the 1980S â€Å" on poverty as a main reason of deviant acts. He states that economic stress and believing in personal failure is â€Å"†¦the chronic culprit for the symptoms of social decay: drugs, alcohol and sex related problems that will affect the young as long as the family itself difficulty facing the strains of inflation and unemployment†. (Omboto et al., 2013) As poverty is linked with social class, more than 80% of the sample from the Y.C.T.C. study belonged to lower social class. Before their arrests a majority of them lived in poor areas around Nairobi city such as Kibera and Mathare. The researcher stated that some of these offences were bare footed. This finding on social class and delinquency confirms the opinion of Wright and Younts (2009) that delinquency rate increased while social class decreased. Social Risk Factors Other researchers believe that some youth get into crime as a form of rebellion against parental authority and due to peer pressure. Youth people may choose to commit crimes as a way to show their independence of the ‘adult’ word and its rules, as a way of getting attention and respect from peers, as well as trying to compensate for their restricted opportunities at school or in their community. By having good relationships with parents during childhood might help in a fortunate transition to adolescence, but it does not guarantee it, as risk factors are linked together. For instance, even though one might have an outstanding relationship with the parents, they might come from a low social status, and therefore it might led them to commit crimes. Hirschi (1969) argues that â€Å"delinquent acts result when an individual’s bond to society is weak or broken. He states that conformity starts from four types of social control which then these create social bonds. The weaker those bonds are the most likely it is for someone to commit a deviant act. For example attachment is one type of social control. Strong social attachments leads to conformity, and by having a fragile family/peer/school relationship, can make people to commit crimes more easily. (Hirschi 1969 cited in Carrabine E. et al.) Ojo (2012) states that broken homes and low education attainment as some of the causes for youth committing deviant acts. In the Y.C.T.C. study, most of boys from the sample came from dysfunctional families. Some of the boys were orphans and had no guardian to look after them before their arrest, other boys has divorced parents or a single parents and others’ parents were alcoholics or were not able to give a ‘good’ parenthood. For instance, in the sample7 boys had divorced parents, 6 youths mothers died, 14 has no father (either died or unknown), while 8 had no parents at all. When it comes to education, 78% did not go beyond class six primary with their schooling. (Omboto et al., 2013) West Farmington (1973) stated that just like low income family income, large family members is also an important factor of youth offending. This is due to the presence of several siblings that leads to faulty upbringing by parents/guardians at critical stages of the child’s development. Individual Risk Factors Other studies have found that individual risk factors also play a role in the behaviour of the youth. Individual factors include factors such as impulsivity, attention problems, low intelligence and low school attainment. For instance. LeMarquand and Tremblay (2001) cited in OJJDP’s argued that â€Å"the best social behaviour characteristic to predict delinquent behaviour before age 13 appears to be aggression†. Hawkins at al. (1998) cited in OJJDP’s also found ‘a positive relationship between hyperactivity, concentration and attention problems, impulsivity and risk taking ad later violent behaviour’ Herrenkohl et al (2001) cited in OJJDP’s stated that â€Å"children with low academic performance, low commitment to school, and low educational aspirations during elementary and middle school grades are at higher risk for child delinquency than are other children† Otherl Risk Factors Other risk factors found in the literature which might influence a young person’s behaviour can be community and neighbourhood. Young people who live in a neighbourhood with a high level of poverty and crimes, is likely to increase the risk of young people being involved in a serious type of offence.( McCord, Widom and Crowell 2001 cited in OJJDP’s). Prevention strategies which can help to lessen the risk factors Richards (2011) believes that taking away the youth form their areas and putting them behind the bars, does not deal with the underlying problem. Therefore some measure should be put in place to help reduce young people involvement in crime. For example the government and private agencies should creaser employment opportunities for youth of employable ages. Parents must also be responsible for their own children (providing moral guidance and material needs). But also learning institutions for youth must put in place sport and extra-curriculum activities, as this will leave them less time, if no time at all to be preoccupied with other things like offences Conclusion From summarising the studies, I have identified 3 main risk factors that can have an impact on young people’s involvement in crime: Social, individual and environmental risk factors. I have also identifies other risk factors which are not too important but it does have some relevance to young people’s behaviour. I have also identified some prevention strategies which might help to young people to stop getting involved in criminal activities. Overall, whether is down to individual, social or environmental factors, young people’s involvement in crimes sees to decrease since 1995. But we cannot say crimes declined due to the improvement of one factor (i.e. social factors) because as I discussed earlier, risk factors are connected with one another. Even though risk factors give us an understanding to why young people might choose to commit crimes, risk factor approach has its limitations. One of them being the risk of being labelled, young people being generalised and it also fails to distinguish correlation form causation. Preventing the delinquents is a big problem with no easy and quick solutions. Risk factors only offers the possibility to establish which youth is more likely to commit deviant acts. If I was to do further research on this topic, I would try to find more research based in the United Kingdom as most of the research I found was from America, however the short time prevented me from doing so. In what ways were the companys operating procedures deficient in responding to this attack? In what ways were they adequate? What additional procedures might have been in place to better handle the attack? In my opinion, Qdata and iPremier really dropped the ball on this by not thinking steps ahead. They did not have a contingency plan or any plan of sort for this worst case scenario. iPremeir had placed too much faith into Qdata`s ability to handle the situation or threat. The first thing I noticed the company did was panic, since there was no crisis strategy/disaster plan. The attack couldnt have happened at the worse time since the attack happened during a high traffic period. If this attack was done by competitors than they got what they were looking for by hurting the reputation of the company. If I was Bob Turley, I may be worried if Im still going to have a position still, since I was not prepared for this infrastructure break. Bob did not go over all known threats to the infrastructure risk matrix and develop procedures to immediately identify the type and risk. These threats would need to be continually assessed as new ones emerge and the identification would have helped deter mined the right procedures for defending against them. My first move I wouldve of made is open a line of communication with Qdata to discuss any risk measure we may have to take. I would not have let the attack go on for so long without pulling the plug to our servers so the customer information cannot be stolen. I would also increase my security against attackers. Having system and users use stronger encryption passwords. Have better real-time monitoring, with a backup plan that has went through testing. Train my employees to better understand the type of attacks and train them on how to handle emergency situations. Even after that make another business continuity plan and test it end to end than repeat. Keep all the software up to date that will better protect from viruses and attacks. You may want to hire an outside audit team to keep a check and balance. The biggest problem is the host provider. If I was Bob, I may want to build a much better relationship with my provider, showing the importance of this never happening again. Since in sense its my companys reputation which is on the line. If that dont work, I would go get a more reliable/reputable host provider. With a high class support and infrastructure, with better security measures. Besides of the updating I would do to the software, Firewalls would also need to up dated. This will protect my company from viruses and also protect from the whatever employee. Again training my employees on what not to do is really important. Train them on emails and what type of emails are at risk. Tell them to always inform somebody on any obscene gestures they computer may be exhibiting. Especially any ha emails. In the aftermath of the attack, what actions would you recommend? My biggest concerns are Legal, Public Relations, Stock Prices, Customer Information and Network Security as least important after the attack. The attack just proved to any competition that my firewalls can be hacked. In looking who could be the one responsible. I would be looking at my competition and what would they have to gain in my attack. Since in sense if I pulled the plug than it would take at least 24 hours to get back running. Even if I did not pull the plug and I rode the attack out than I would still have to shut down business because of then security breach. No matter which route taken, I would still be at lost once my firewalls proved to be vulnerable. There a lot of equations to look at. This is the main reason I would have an outside Network Operations Center (NOC). Hatchet :: essays research papers

Within reading the first few pages of Hatchet, I knew I was going to enjoy the book. Hatchet was a story about bravery, courage, and strength. I enjoyed reading this great novel by Gary Paulsen.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The story begins when Brian, a thirteen-year-old boy, is traveling on an airplane. Brian is from the city, and is traveling to Canada to visit his Father. The setting is in the Canadian wilderness and is most important because Brian’s adventure would have been impossible in a city. Brian was very upset about his parents separation, but was excited to be visiting his father. However â€Å"The Secret,† as Brian refers to it, is always in the back of his mind. Brian has seen his mother with another man. He wants desperately to tell his father, but knows his father would be crushed. I think that this situation is something that could happen in real life. Brian is totally distraught. If I were in his place, I would be also. But instead of worrying about telling my father, I think I would be worrying about confronting my mother with the situation. I would feel I needed to stop the affair before my father did find out.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Brian’s trip is very unexpectedly interrupted, when the plane’s pilot has a heart attack. Brian tries to continue the flight, with help from men over the radio. Unfortunately, the radio dies, and the plane runs out of gas. I think this part of the story, is very unrealistic. If the plane were supposed to make it all the way to the destination, why would it suddenly run out of gas? Also, why would the radios suddenly become broken? I realize this was the whole point of the novel but it doesn’t seem realistic.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Brian then spends exactly Fifty-four days by an L-shaped lake. He faces many conflicts. He is put in a situation like the â€Å"Survivor† television show. He needs to find a way to survive, unlike on the show, by himself. He needed protection from the weather, so he built shelter. He was hungry, so he hunted for food. He discovered how to catch fish, rabbit, and discovered bushes of nuts. He also had a bad encount er with â€Å"Poison berries,† as he called them, which made his stomach sick. Brian also had encounters with wild animals, such as, a porcupine, and a moose. Brian needed warmth, so he made fire, without any matches.

Scapegoats of our sedentary world, targets of the most primitive social rejection or the most rabid literary or cinematographic romanticism, they pursue their quest far from our technological and social upheaval. The Gypsies live a constant paradox: in spite of their refusal to be integrated, they have become the (sometimes exclusive) repository of the culture of the country they inhabit. Throwing tradition and fashion to the wind, the Gypsies have always used their versatility and sense of improvisation to adapt their musical style to others they discover during their travels. Each time traces of the previous country mark them as foreigners who stick out amid their now hosts. The director, Tony Galtif himself is a descendant of the Rom tribe. In this documentary is his effort to create a dazzling musical and anthology of this forgotten culture. Mixture of good and evil: In the scene where a small boy and his mother are waiting at a railway station, the director tries to bring out the belief of the Rom people about human nature being good. In that scene, the boy offers a small amount of money to one of the Rom musicians to play him a song, the musician laughs at the boy, takes the money and puts it back into the boys pocket, and then plays music for the boy for free. His group joins in, and they play delightful music for the small boy. This is a really touching scene, I thought. On the other hand, the gypsies through their songs and music, depict their history. A history which has always been stained with sadness. The gypsies have been persecuted wherever they went, they were never considered part of any society other than their own. The gypsies strongly curse their fate, and show their unhappiness towards these societies of people who have never given them any acceptance. Man subjugated by nature: The gypsies sing of their history, with a sad tone. They believe it is their fate to be wanderers. They strongly resent this fate, because it has brought with it sadness. Life demands to have at least some constants, but in the lives of this gypsies, the only constant is their change, their journey to a new place. Over these years, not much has changed about their life, they are still persecuted. This has lead to the strong fortification of the belief that they have little control over their fate, and that they cannot surpass the conditions that this life has set for them. Present Oriented: This is a particularly striking feature of their culture. The very fact that they are constantly on the move, travelling from one place to another, clearly highlights their strong faith in the importance of the present. They live in the present, since they are not aware of what the future has in store for them, they dont plan their lives for future needs, the way we do. At the same time, they associate their life also with their past, their history, their traditional values. Grave physical handicap which is so restricting that the individual cannot, even after due consideration, counseling and retraining, tolerate such a limited existence. This is a fairly rare reason for suicide most impaired people cope remarkably well with their affliction but there are some who would, at a certain point, rather die. What are the ethical parameters for eu thanasia? The person is a mature adult. This is essential. The exact age will depend on the individual but the person should not be a minor who comes under quite different laws. The person has clearly made a considered decision. An individual has the ability nowadays to indicate this with a "Living Will" (which applies only to disconnection of life supports) and can also, in today's more open and tolerant climate about such actions, freely discuss the option of euthanasia with health professionals, family, lawyers, etc. My position is that euthanasia should be legalized for the terminally ill.
