Origins And History Of The Electoral College Origins and History of the Electoral College In order to appreciate the reasons for the Electoral College, it is essential to understand its historical context and the problem that the Founding Fathers were trying to solve. They faced the difficult question of how to elect a president in a nation that: Origins of the Electoral College The Constitutional Convention considered several possible methods of selecting a president. One idea was to have the Congress choose the president. This idea was rejected, however, because some felt that making such a choice would be too divisive an issue and leave too many hard feelings in the Congress. Others felt that such a procedure would invite unseemly political bargaining, corruption, and perhaps even interference from foreign powers. Still others felt that such an arrangement would upset the balance of power between the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. A second idea was to have the State legislatures select the pres ident. This idea, too, was rejected out of fears that a president so beholden to the State legislatures might permit them to erode federal authority and thus undermine the whole idea of a federation. A third idea was to have the president elected by a direct popular vote. Direct election was rejected not because the Framers of the Constitution doubted public intelligence but rather because they feared that without sufficient information about candidates from outside their State, people would naturally vote for a favorite son from their own State or region. At worst, no president would emerge with a popular majority sufficient to govern the whole country. At best, the choice of president would always be decided by the largest, most populous States with little regard for the smaller ones. Finally, a so-called Committee of Eleven in the Constitutional Convention proposed an indirect election of the president through a College of Electors. The First Design In the first design of the Ele ctoral College (described in Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution): Each State was allocated a number of Electors equal to the number of its U.S. Senators (always 2) plus the number of its U.S. Representatives (which may change each decade according to the size of each State?s population as determined in the decennial census). This arrangement built upon an earlier compromise in the design of the Congress itself and thus satisfied both large and small States. The manner of choosing the Electors was left to the individual State legislatures, thereby pacifying States suspicious of a central national government. Members of Congress and employees of the federal government were specifically prohibited from serving as an Elector in order to maintain the balance between the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Each State?s Electors were required to meet in their respective States rather than all together in one great meeting. This arrangement, it was thought, would prevent bribery, corruption, secret dealing, and foreign influence. In order to prevent Electors from voting only for a favorite son of their own State, each Elector was required to cast two votes for president, at least one of which had to be for someone outside their home State. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland Essays - Alice In Wonderland Alice's Adventures In Wonderland An analysis of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland The following text is a small part of a project from: Jerry Maatta, HII, Katedralskolan, Uppsala, Sweden Written in March 1997 Interpretations and opinions It is important to bear in mind that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, however special it may seem and however many different interpretations one thinks one can find, is, after all, but a story written to entertain Charles Dodgson's favourite child-friends. It is very obvious in the story that it was written for the three Liddell girls, of whom Alice was the closest to Dodgson. In the introductory poem to the tale, there are clear indications to the three, there named Prima, Secunda and Tertia Latin for first, second and third respectively in feminized forms. The part considering rowing on happy summer days was derived directly from reality. It is said that he used to row out on picnics with the Liddell girls and tell them stories. On one of these excursions it started raining heavily and they all became soaked. This, it is said, was the inspiration to the second chapter of the book, The Pool of Tears. The ever-occurring number of three points out Dodgson always having in mind the three girls he tells the story to. It could, of course, having in mind the fact that he was a cleric, be the Christian Trinity or something completely different. Many people have seen Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a prime example of the limit-breaking book from the old tradition illuminating the new one. They also consider it being a tale of the variations on the debate of gender and that it's continually astonishing us with its modernity. From the looks of it, the story about Alice falling through a rabbit-hole and finding herself in a silly and nonsense world, is fairly guileless as a tale. The underlying story, the one about a girl maturing away from home in what seems to be a world ruled by chaos and nonsense, is quite a frightening one. All the time, Alice finds herself confronted in different situations involving various different and curious animals being all alone. She hasn't got any help at all from home or the world outside of Wonderland. Lewis Carroll describes the fall into the rabbit-hole as very long and he mentions bookshelves on the sides of the hole. Perhaps it is an escape into literature he hints at. Carroll is an expert at puns and irony. The part with the mad tea-party is one of the best examples of this. There's a lot of humour in the first Alice book, but in the second the mood gets a bit darker and more melancholic. The theme with Alice growing and shrinking into different sizes could reflect the ups and downs of adolescence with young people sometimes feeling adult and sometimes quite the opposite. The hesitation so typical of adolescent girls is reflected in Alice's thoughts: She generally gave herself good advice (though she very seldom followed it). Many short comments point to teenage recklessness, restlessness and anxiety in all its different forms. One other example of maturing is Alice getting used to the new sizes she grows. She talks to her feet and learns some of the new ways her body works in. Her feelings are very shaken from her adventures and she cries quite often when it's impossible to obey the rules of the Wonderland or is it adulthood? Everything is so out-of-the-way down here, as Alice often repeats to herself. Alice doesn't like the animals in Wonderland who treat her as a child, but sometimes she gets daunted by the responsibility she has to take. The quote Everyone in Wonderland is mad, otherwise they wouldn't be down here told by the Cheshire Cat can be given an existential meaning. Is it that everyone alive is mad being alive, or everyone dreaming him- or herself away is mad due to the escape from reality? Time is a very central theme in the story. The Hatter's watch shows days because it's always six o' clock and tea-time. Time matters in growing up, I guess, but further interpretations are left unsaid. The poem in chapter 12 hints at forbidden love, and it is entirely possible that it is about his platonic love for children, or Mrs. Liddell, for that matter. Angels in America The play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, by Tony Kushner, contained situations in which characters’ personalities underwent great changes from the beginning of the play to the end. One of the most significant and noticeable changes was that of Harper. She was married to the character named Joe, who she knew was gay and the way she dealt with this came to relate directly to her own sanity. In part one, Harper spent a lot of time with her imaginary friend and travel agent Mr. Lies. He was her escape mechanism from the horrible reality she could not deal with that was her life. In part two, Harper came to grips with her husband’s homosexuality and the fact that she was not going to change him. As Harper learned to deal with her husband’s sexuality she became more in touch with her own sanity. In part one Millenium Approaches, everything is falling apart in Harper’s life. She is well aware that her husband is gay. Despite not being told from his mouth, Harper knows and it bothers her that she is in a marriage where her husband secretly desires a partner of the opposite sex from her. Nothing seems to be going right and instead of dealing with reality, Harper takes Valium to escape from reality. Her imaginary friend and confidante Mr. Lies becomes her only companion. She can not function in real life anymore. She takes trips all over the world (imaginary world) just to get away. In Act Mr. Lies explains â€Å"We mobilized the globe, we sent people adrift, we stir the populace and send nomads eddying across the planet. We are adept of motion acolytes of the flux. Cash, check or credit card. Name your destination.† This quote illustrates the freedom that Mr. Lies allows Harper to experience. With the help of Mr. Lies, Harper could go anywhere in the w orld and have any experience without the burdens of real life travel. In Harper’s mind, she gained all of the real life advantages of getting away such as the feelings of escapism and relaxation, but did not have to deal with life’s hassles to obtain them. An example of the above is when Harper had Mr. Lies take her to Antarctica. Her reason for going there was to find people and the trip would ultimately numb her feelings and freeze her tears. â€Å"This is a retreat, a vacuum, its virtue is that it lacks everything; deep-freeze for feelings.. You can be... ... of the play she is taking the initiative to deal with her problems and more importantly take steps towards making things better in her real life. Towards the end of the play when Harper starts working out the situation with Joe’s homosexuality, Mr. Lies is around less and less. She did not need him anymore. He was simply an escape from having to deal with her real life. After Harper learned to handle what was thrown at her by life, she did not need Mr. Lies to take her away anymore. The interactions that Harper had with Mr. Lies represented her ability to deal with the truth. In Part One when he took her away all of the time and she went to him for advice, it was apparent that she could not handle her marriage and her life. Taking Valium and confiding in Mr. Lies was the only way that Harper knew out of her reality. In part II, Harper confronted her problems and was prepared to change what was wrong, she did not need an escape mechanism because she could now face the problems of her life that she could not admit and take care of when she would run to Mr. Lies. Harper grew from part I to part I, and the more she grew was the less she needed Mr. Lies to take her away.

The story was all about Vicente, the bus conductor and the tutor of the two children in a village. (paragraph 2) says, The girl at the age of seven and the boy at the age of eight ,simply tells us that there was a seven and eight year old child in the story. At the start of the story we could clearly see how the family and the mother (who is the president of their own village) trusted the conductor that’s why in the first paragraph of the story, it says, â€Å"there was nothing to fear.† Victor was characterized as a gentle and kind. He was a dark little man whose voice is soft and calm in manners. This is the contrast to the characterization of the mother because she is tall and she spoke in a voice of very low, and very heavy. This emphasizes the darkness of Victor and the magnificence of the mother. While I was reading the story I saw the paragraph 6-8 and we can clearly see in this paragraph (that there was something strange or wrong in the motive of Victor for the little girl because he slapped the boy and started to say â€Å"boys don’t kiss boys†.the idea that Victor gives so much favour to the girl by giving her 3 pencils and by doting on her (paragraph 12) got my attention. While (paragraph 18) gives me an instinct to create personal judgment that Victor abuses the childhood of the little girl. The paragraph 23 says, â€Å" his face was all in sweat, and his eyes looked very strange, and he indicated to her that she must not turn around, attend to the homework she was writing.† this paragraph gives me a final conclusion of the whole story that Victor really likes the little girl. At the end of the story in (paragraph 36) the story tells us how the mothers raise their hands against the abuse of males. It implies that a women or a lady ought to be respected even if they are still young at age that’s why in (paragraph 40) the mother says, â€Å"take a bath quickly†. That means to say, to cleanse from all filthiness and stain that she received from Victor, the conductor. In (paragraph 41) the mother soaped her and wiped her gently all over because the story wants to teach us a lesson. That being a woman or as a lady we must preserve our purity and that we must be against from the abuse of males. There are times that we feel that the person is trustworthy but sadly they were not. Trust is gained. While reading the story only three subject  matters revolved in my mind. The trust that we must gain, the dignity/respect that a lady must have and the heroic act or magnificent role of the mother in raising their kids these are the important lesson that we must get from the story. Trust can only be gain by the people who really deserve of it. We may deceive or act like somebody that was not the real of us but once the given trust fall apart it will be very hard to put the trust into its whole. His sole motivation is to find out who he is. The voice prompts Ray to find an old ballplayer named Archibald Controlling Graham, who had been dead since 1972. Ray sets out to find the author Terrace Mann, who writes about baseball players of the past The trip takes him all the way to Boston. Hear he tells Mann Of the rift between him and his father because he refused to play catch with him. At this point Ray is fully engulfed in finding out what he is supposed to accomplish. This is exactly what he needed to do though. By being fully immersed in figuring out this mystery, he has allowed his mind to believe what is happening, and if he rides it out he will find the truth. While Ray is in Boston, full fledged games are Ewing played at his field back at home.This is another affirmation that his dream is falling into place; this point of the movie represents him getting closer and closer figuring out who he is. Ray travels back to Iowa, with Mann. When he returns he finds that he is bankrupt and that his house is being foreclosed. Mann tells Ray that spectators will come watch the games and pay admission so they can recapture their innocence. It is almost like Mann is a link to the past. The movie uses him to capture the surreal essence of baseball, the good ole days where the roots of baseball were born. Rays life is crumbling before his eyes.He put everything he had into finding his dream and it seems as if its too late. It is at that point when all seems lost that Ray is rewarded for his commitment. The catcher removes his mask and Ray sees that it is his father as young man. This is the classic story of a man recapturing what he lost as a child. Even though it is fiction it is a reminder to cherish the moments we have as children, because we never get the chance to relive that again. It also shows that parents are always willing to forgive their children no matter what. My Perception of Marriage and Family Essay The family is the basic component of our society. Society came from families that multiplied and united years before. Society was formed by a form of social contract in which families volunteered to be parts. When we talk of society, we cannot help but reflect to the idea of family. The two concepts are corollary. It is the family that first teaches us how life should be lived. The family is the basic molding institution of each of us. It greatly influences our lives and the way we view life.I am from a typical Asian family which I consider a traditional type of a family. Asian family can be seen as a functional family in which every member has its own function. The father is the one tasked to find means for the whole family to survive and he is the one in charge in majority of the decision making process. The mother on the other hand, is the one who is tasked to raise the children and to do household chores while the father is out working. The children’s function is to take e ducation and when at home, they will help the mother in cleaning the house and in preparing food for the arrival of the father.As a person coming from a traditional Asian family, I greatly consider my plans of marriage someday as patterned to the structure of which my parents upheld with just some considerations. I look at my father as somewhat my ideal husband and I view my mother as the person that I want to be but aside from duplicating my mother’s service to my family, I want to be a working mother someday. My family context has a strong influence on how I view and want to live life as a whole but then again, I’m also capable of knowing the needs that may arise in building my own family. I find it necessary for me to work someday in order to lessen the burden of working to the shoulders of my husband.Basically, my family’s definition of a family and how it functions is a product of social construction. â€Å"Social constructs are institutionalized entity or artifacts in a social system, invented or constructed by participants in a particular culture or society that exist because people agree to behave as if it exist, or agree to follow certain conventional rules, or behave as if such agreement or rules existed† (wikipedia.org). As a person coming from a typical Asian family, I also came from a particular Asian context having its own set of social constructs. Social constructs are perceived maxims of people that were put into convention and transformed into social beliefs that will influence people with their daily actions. My context is the reason why my understanding and plan of a family in the future is greatly patterned to the family I came from. The sets of social constructs are somewhat the basis of rightness of my decisions. The lives of people became always intertwined with these sets of beliefs such as I’m intertwined with the kind of family I came from. Social constructs dictate the lives of people. How people ac t depend on the set of social beliefs they have.Social constructs also undergoes evolution. It changes and grows from time to time. This is due to the fact that people’s mind are so rich and full of possibilities. It is capable of conceptualizing new ideas for what they perceived as for the improvement of what they aim for. Social constructs are dynamic because the minds of people are also dynamic. This is the reason why I am also open to be a working mother just like a mother from other types of family. I don’t hinder myself to other perspectives as long as it’s of good help in improving my way of life. It is part of being human that we create standards on how to live life better but it is also part of man’s nature to grow and be open for betterment.Therefore, even though I am from a traditional family and the context I came from greatly influenced my line of thought and understanding of marriage and family, I am still open and receptive of things that I deem to be right and appropriate and things that can improve my way of life due to my capacity to rationalize.
